Chapter Eleven

August 24, 1902

San Francisco

Domenico Sienna seemed to be softening. It had been more than three months since his conversation with Anders Kristiansen at the family’s garden party and he was convinced of Anders’ sincerity towards Valeria. Surprisingly, he found himself embracing the thought of having an artist as a son-in-law.

He shook his head as he lit a cigar and thought of how much he had changed since coming to America. He once thought a reliable, independent trade was the only sensible way to ensure monetary security. Now he took financial risks into uncharted business arenas that required him to relinquish full control and delegate responsibility to people outside of his extended family.

That was only the start of the changes he considered as he placed his cigar in the lead-crystal ashtray and settled into his favorite chair with a tumbler of scotch beside him. His world had expanded, it seemed. There were different people in it now—friends and associates from other walks of life he never would have met had he stayed in his native Italy. These people enriched his life and brought a wider spectrum of thought and information to him. He had parlayed their influence into better business dealings than he could have ever manufactured on his own.

America, he thought, was indeed the great melting pot it was reputed to be and everybody appeared to benefit.

He turned his thoughts back to Valeria and Anders. It would be any week now that Anders would ask for her hand in marriage, of this Domenico had no doubt. He could see the signs from everyone around him, although they all took great measures to mask their encouragement.

Domenico let his mind muse upon the ways of women. It was amusing to him that they approached the business of Valeria’s romance with a studied indirectness aimed only at making the courtship appear as if it were his own idea. They tiptoed around him, pointing out the many selling points of Anders Kristiansen: the contacts and connections he had made in San Francisco in such a short amount of time; his impressive list of patrons; his steady work schedule; his social popularity; and the enormous flattery of his attentions upon Valeria out of all the eligible young ladies in town.

They need not have wasted their time. Domenico could see the facts for himself, but he did love the sport of watching the women in his life twitter on as they sought his permission on the subject. I’m a changed man, he thought to himself. Anders Kristiansen is not even an Italian.

He supposed the changes in him had come about at the hands of his wife, Adriana. She was beautiful and sophisticated and people naturally gravitated to her. Her favorite pastime was entertaining, and the invitations she extended were always reciprocated. As the years of their marriage progressed, Domenico had unwittingly grown from an austere, serious-minded young man to a man who actually enjoyed the pleasures and frivolity of society.
